Fear is a paralyser. Does fear of failure or fear of success prevent you from achieving your wants, needs and goals? You may not be aware of it but believe me… it happens more than you would think.
Fear of failure is rather self-explanatory but fear of success is not so well known. You may not even realize that you have a fear of success, so try this little exercise…
Imagine achieving your ultimate goal… really imagine it using all your senses. After a few moments notice your thoughts and feelings as you’re imagining your success. What are those thoughts and feelings… are they positive thoughts and feelings that draw you in or are they negative thoughts, feelings and excuses? If it is the latter, then you fear success.
You may wonder… I know I want ‘this’ so much… I know I have the skills and abilities so why can’t I get there from here? ‘This’ could be finding a loving partner… getting a promotion… changing careers… losing weight… leaving an intimate relationship… etc. How do you override that fear and bridge that gap? Everyone has different personalities and what may work for one person, may not work for someone else. Here are a few suggestions…
Realize that your fear will be there and it’s ‘voice’ will try and stop you. Feel the fear… acknowledge it has its usefulness at times but this is not one of those times… and override it.
Some people need to override in ‘baby steps’… get one step anchored and maintained and then add another step…but keep adding steps… don’t let fear talk you out of it.
Other people like to jump in the deep end and just go for it. The same suggestion applies… if you ‘crash and burn’ don’t give up… find another way… find the solution…maybe dial it back a bit… maybe break it down into smaller steps.
The most important part is to not let fear control you…you take charge over your fear. Have a plan…provide yourself with a drop down menu prior to starting… so that you have a variety of possibilities to achieve your goal.
Expect and anticipate that some of the things you are attempting… will not work. If you expect that some things won’t work then you won’t be as upset when they don’t. We have no choice about making mistakes… it’s just part of being human. If our attitude is that those mistakes are a good thing as they help us learn… then the fear of failure and the fear of success loses its impact.
Above all else… be kind…caring… and respectful… to yourself and others!
